clip the cord

I ran across this great little idea the other day and thought I’d share...

Pesky computer, ipod, ipad, phone charger cords? It drives me crazy when they slip down behind the desk...

Someone smart came up with this very simple and cheap solution!

You can pick up a package of these clips pretty much anywhere...just make sure they are large enough to slip in the cords and then keep them secure when the clip is pushed down on the edge of your desk.

Now, you’ve got easy access to the cords at all times!

Love the simple, smart solutions to every day annoyances.

lighthouse living

Did you know that 976 lighthouses across Canada were recently declared surplus property?
Did you know that since then, I’ve been totally obsessed with the idea of buying a lighthouse and converting it into a cottage?

Think about it. They are in the most beautiful locations. They are all waterfront properties. They all offer the very best views. And they are all architecturally interesting buildings with a ton of history and character.

I think you’d need a brilliant architect. And a fantastic contractor. And probably a bucket of money for the renovation.

But besides all that, what an exciting interior design challenge that would be!

These are just a few of the images I found of ones that have been converted all over the world.

Can you imagine anything better?!?

lamp makeover #3 (and draw prize!)

You may remember that a while ago, one of my lamp makeover projects was a  1980's light pink glass lamp. After I finished with it, it was a fun white lamp with a white linen lamp shade.

Well, after ruining the “world’s ugliest lamp” makeover project last week, which was meant to be the draw prize for those of you who joined rouge’s new facebook page, I found another one just like it!

So...I gave it a good cleaning, gently gave it a good going over with light sandpaper to remove any finish on the lamp, and cleaned it again.

Then, I covered the fixture part of the lamp as well as the cord with paper bags and tape.

Finally, I gave it a couple of coats of glossy “true blue” paint to ensure a smooth and brilliant finish.

Add on a square-ish linen lamp shape and voila...a great looking lamp that will add a big pop of color to any decor.

And it’s one of a kind. Not perfect, but not like any other lamp in the world. Definitely unique.

Now... to give it away.

If you join us at www.facebook.com/rougesuzanne -- where you’ll find links to weekly blog posts and design ideas, tips, random thoughts and photos – before the END of the day tomorrow, you will be automatically be entered into a draw to win it!

Winner announced on the facebook page on Tuesday.

dreamy designs

Predictably, one of the other things I really love is great architectural design. If I was any good at math and science, I might have been an architect.

Anyway...

Instead, I love stepping beyond the world of interior design to look at the bigger picture, and to dream about how they all work together.

Here is a facebook page I recently discovered. It’s called tododesign and it’s fabulous.

Since spring is supposed to be here (hard to tell today, mind you!), it’s wonderful to dream about having a "cabin" like this one.

The inside surprised me and was not what I expected.

I think this one is set up purely as an office. That would be pretty cool to have in your backyard, too!

If it was truly a cabin in the woods that was mine to decorate, I’d probably go a little less sleek on the inside and a little more cozy and warm. Perhaps it's the all baby blue that bothers me...

But really, how cool is this??

Loads of great eye-candy on this page, if you love dreamy design like I do!

Enjoy.

spring fever

I'm feeling spring!

Here are a couple of things that caught my eye this week that would be great to add a little spring into your space.

I love this mirror...the mix of vintage looking and modern. Picture it on a dark grey wall! Not too girlie, but would add a lot of glam to any modern space. (Home Sense - $49.99)

How about this fun red pillow? Very au courant with the lovely felt flowers. (Home Sense -- $29.99)

Also love this chair. The green graphic pattern livens it up for a nice punch of spring color. (Home Outfitters -- $299.99)

Don’t forget a few fresh accessories like this (fake) boxwood sphere simply sitting in a crisp, clean white bowl. (Dollarstore -- $3.50)

Finally, these solid chairs may be plastic, but are very chic. Molded as one heavy piece, they would be great on the patio...or even year round in the kitchen! (Home Sense -- $49.99)
