avant-guarde art

Great idea in the latest Style at Home magazine...had to steal it right away and try it out! It's a perfect way to add a great punch of energy to your space through artwork.

What you'll need:

  • fun fabric
  • scissors
  • embroidery rings in multiple sizes

Instructions:
  • separate the embroidery ring into it's two pieces
  • lay out the fabric on a hard, flat surface (easier for cutting!)
  • place the smaller of the two rings on the fabric...move it around so you see what you like inside the ring
  • cut the fabric at least 2 inches wider than your smaller ring
  • set the fabric, face down, on top of the larger ring
  • set the inside ring on top of the larger, outside ring. Centre and push down to tighten and secure the fabric
  • gently pull the fabric until it's nice and tight inside the rings
  • tighten the screw on the side of the embroidery ring to secure
  • trim the excess fabric
  • hang on the wall

What's great about this idea is that you can change out the fabrics as often as you like to change up the look. This took me about 10-15 minutes from start to finish (when I hung them on the wall!).

And you can't beat the price. I bought my supplies at Value Village...the "vintage-y" looking fabric is actually a set of curtains that I scooped up for $9.99 (and I have TONS left over for other projects), and both embroidery rings for $1.49 & $1.99.

I'm on the lookout for more embroidery rings, so I can expand this art piece all along the wall. I'll mix up the fabrics too, so it will really have some punch!

Enjoy,

xx rouge.

talent scout...great idea!

Here’s a picture from the current style at home (www.styleathome.ca) issue…it’s from their high/low decorating section.

Pay close attention to the artwork….I absolutely LOVE this piece.

Here, the art inspired the interior. The stylist pulled the wall color from the art saying, “the piece is so strong and bold, I thought it’d be fun to surround her in a sea of the same brilliant turquoise.”

And they made three other color suggestions pulled from the piece that could be anything from a bold wall color choice or more simply, accent colors for the room. Notice how that was done here.

The results are tremendous. And really quite simple. You can build the design scheme for a room around anything you love. Choose your jumping off point, then build step-by-step from there.

And I love the other idea included on the following page…

“Every child is as artist,” said Pablo Picasso, so color us lucky that student’s masterpieces are more affordable then professional artwork. Contact your local high school and ask to see the students’ art.”

Smart. Cost effective. And a fun way to support your local budding art community!

kids squared

There’s an exciting new Halifax-based company on the horizon.

“Kids Squared” will be a web-based company that sells affordable, original artwork for kids rooms. A variety of local artists and designers are currently working away on the collection of artwork that will soon be up for grabs.

So excited to report that rouge was approached to design a series! Seen above, the “three birdies” series, done with charcoal and pastels, will be three 12 x 12’s on canvas available for approx $25 -- only through Kids Squared when the company launches in spring 2011.

The site will offer many options…available in a series of three, or singles or mix and match. But it will all be original artwork and it will all be affordable. Paintings, paper art, graphic art, photography and more will be digitized, printed on canvas, stretched onto a frame and delivered right to your door after you place your on-line order.

Perfect for those design savvy parents who refuse to abandon their sense of style when kiddies are added to the family! They will also make for fabulous gifts too…

We are so humbled at being asked to contribute a designer series to Kids Squared. And we had so much fun designing these, we are already thinking about the next series! Who knew?!?

Stay tuned…we’ll let you know the website and details closer to the launch.
