I got chills, they’re multiplying…and I’m loo-sing contro-ol...the power you’re supplying…it’s electrifying!

You’re the one that I want, you’re the one I want, want…ooh, ooh, ooh honey…

Phew, now that I got that out of my system, let’s talk about studs!

Studs are everywhere. And they aren’t just for traditional dens, stuffy libraries, or a man’s study (although, these are available too!)

There are many other looks that also feature studs...here are just a few to think about:

Dining room chairs – black fabric and silver studs are tres chic and will last the test of time, while these sparkly silver leather and silver studs are a more slick option.

A combo of silvery grey, black, and purple patterned fabric are fun and bold, but still cozy and inviting.

Beige chairs with a Paris word motif offer a more French country look.

Occasional chairs – I love this rounded back, tufted and studded dark grey chair that would be a great choice for just about any modern décor (see above too!)

How about something that looks a bit more like an antique such as either of these two?

Finally, my absolute favorite (despite the footprints!!) is this raspberry-pinkish velour chair that would be a bold hit of color in either the living room, bedroom, in an entryway or alcove.

inspiration boards

I thought I’d show you a couple of inspiration boards that I’ve recently done for a client.

After purchasing a new home, the client’s design challenge was to use all of the existing furniture and accessories from the old home and give the new house a refreshed and new look and feel.

rouge was hired to tackle the kitchen, dining room, living room, master bedroom and master bath.

New paint colors go a long way to achieve this goal.

Furniture placement in each room is also different from the old house as each room is a different shape and the flow of the house is also different.

This was also a great opportunity to use existing pieces in new way…for example, the buffet that was in the old dining room was placed in the new living room and now holds the TV and other electronics. One of the sofas from the old living room is now placed in the new master bedroom.

I can’t wait to see the finished rooms...I hope to show you some before and after pictures as soon as the client finishes all the painting I left her with!

The inspiration boards should help keep her focused and help her achieve her ultimate goal of creating warm, inviting and refreshed spaces to enjoy.

hohoho

The tree is trimmed. The Yule log is burning. The twinkle lights are twinkling. The presents are wrapped and under the tree. The fridge will soon be stuffed with delights…just like the turkey. And I’m humming along to holiday favorites. Friends and family will soon be gathering.

rouge is ready. Now all that's left is to wait for Santa.

‘Tis the season for many wonderful things…including a good holiday break. So, you won’t find just a little rouge for the next two weeks. Fret not, I’ll be back after the festivities are over.

In the meantime…enjoy and be merry.

sparkle and light

Last year, I went glam for the holidays (see last year’s blog). This year, it’s really all about using the same collection of decorations, which admittingly is getting large, in new combinations.

A more traditional feel in the living room where the real tree -- with white lights and white ornaments mixed in with sparkly silvery ornaments -- smells divine! (The white and sparkly ornaments were previously hung from a dowl over the threshold between the living room and kitchen.)

The tree is pulled together with a white and silvery tree skirt – rimmed with light grey fluffy faux fur! So awesome.

A silver star hung on the back of the door, silver bells on the door handles and a big wooden bowl filled with fresh pine cones rounds out the decorations in the living room. (The silver star was used as a tree topper last year.)

Much more colorful décor is in the kitchen/dining area. To fit with the existing décor, there are glass bowls filled with red and turquoise ornaments which serve as a centre piece on the dining table.

White candles top off the table setting offering a comfy and warm holiday glow. (The turquoise ornaments were my pop of color on the tree two years ago. The red ornaments are from at least 4 years ago...maybe more.)

Silver tissue paper flowers, with silver balls in the centers, line the staircase railing which leads to the second floor. (I made them last year for the holidays.)

This year, I added sparkly turquoise birds with feathers to help tie the flowers in with the overall color scheme. (These were part of the tree decorations two years ago.)

The new mud room features my vintage glam white feather tree with black ornaments. A silky white and black tree skirt hides the not-so-nice metal stand. (All new last year, when this was my only tree.)

The tree looks great with the bold black and white floor and the large metal sliding doors provide an excellent backdrop. To finish it off perfectly, a sparkly pink feather peacock sits near the top of the tree. (New this year...$1.25 at the Dollar Store.)

And outside? Well…that’s bit more traditional with lots of fresh spruce boughs in existing pots, a bit of a lime green ribbon, pine cones and little white lights.

This week’s decor lesson is finding creative ways to use what you already have. I’m often surprised at how easy it is to make existing decorations look like new by using them in different ways.

wrap it up

I LOVE wrapping Christmas gifts. Love it.

For me, the presentation of the gift is just as important as the gift itself. Maybe because I take special care in it, or maybe it’s because I try to put lots of thought into it. Maybe it’s simply because I love wrapping!

This year’s color scheme is red and green, but it’s not traditional as you might think…it’s more fresh and modern and fun.

I found this great red paper with polka-dots, and a fresh shade of green ribbon. As I was looking through my stash of other papers, I realized that I already had a solid green paper that was a perfect match to the ribbon. So I added that tone-on-tone look into the mix.

I like to add a little something different or unexpected to my holiday gift wrapping…this year it was wooden ‘noel’s (that I think were meant to be painted and used as tree ornaments). I actually picked these up after Christmas last year at the Dollar store and had them safely tucked away. Yup…5 per $1 bag! What a find.

For my homemade gifts, I used plain, clear cellophane bags, the same green ribbon and pine cones I picked up last month along my favorite walk in the woods. They still smell divine!

For gift tags, I’m using the left-over papers from last week’s blog project. Simply cut to size, punch a hole in the corner to tie to the gift, and write your message on the back.

I’ll have to tell you about my homemade gift ideas later…many of my friends and family are avid readers of just a little rouge and I don’t want to ruin the surprise!

Until then, I’m imagining lots of these presents tucked under my tree, waiting for the recipients to enjoy. I’ll enjoy wrapping everything, I’ll enjoy seeing them under my tree, but mostly, I’ll enjoy giving a little something to the wonderful people in my life.

DIY christmas decoration

Ok…well it’s not quite December, so I’m breaking my own “don’t think about Christmas until December 1st” rule.

I tried an easy, low cost decoration idea yesterday. I saw it in the latest Style at Home magazine (www.styleathome.com) first. Then, I saw it again after that. Then, it seemed that everywhere I look, I see these adorable little trees everywhere!

Here’s the project description how to:

Gather a selection of patterned wallpapers in similar tones.
Draw a circle in pencil on the back of a piece of wallpaper (the size of the circle will determine how tall the cone will be) and cut it out using scissors.
Mark the mid-point and cut a seam to the mark.
Bring the two edges of the seam together and continue to roll the paper to create a cone shape.
Secure the outside edge to the cone with double-sided tape.
Repeat with remaining papers.

Tips:

I didn’t have wallpaper samples, so I picked up a few individual pieces of paper from the scrapbook section at Michaels (www.michaels.com). Be sure not to buy anything too thick, as it is difficult to roll without tearing.

I used different sized pot lids and bowls to trace the circles on the back of my papers.

I didn’t have any double-sided tape on hand…the glue stick works just fine!

The end result is a fun, low cost and easy DIY holiday decoration.

Cone-shaped trees of various heights can be highly impactful when displayed en masse. Imagine them as a centre peice for a table setting, placed on a shelf, or on a side table or coffee table. Anywhere that you have a bit of space to display them in bunches!

Here are just a few of the ones I didI choose some bright colors that fit with my decor, and some in the more traditional red and green but with patterns, textures and sparkles (of course!).

I rolled some of them the opposite way and you can see the layers, but I liked the effect, so I left some that way.

Can’t wait to put them out with my other decorations (but I will because after all, it’s NOT Christmas yet!!).

bedroom makeover...the reveal

As per last week’s blog…this week’s project was to make over a bedroom…mine!

My goal was to give the room a significant makeover in terms of the look & feel, while using all the same accessories, sticking to a tight budget.

The new color scheme is a grey-ish lavender-ish (amorous AF-600, Benjamin Moore) and a beautiful grey-ish black (wrought iron 2124-10, Benjamin Moore). The wrought iron was painted over the existing paintable wallpaper and has become more of a feature wall than it was before, because it’s a different color than the rest of the room.

I am always amazed what a can of paint can do!

Next, I took another look at the other accessories in the room and culled through them. A chair (that only served as a place to throw clothes), and giant green palm leaves were taken out of the room.

To make my existing accessories work, I also did a few simple DIY projects to pull the look together.

Headboard – I already had two black velvet curtains in the house that I don’t use anymore, so I used one to do a quick and simple reupholster of the headboard. Layout the fabric right over the existing fabric, use staple gun to secure the fabric to the back of the headboard, pulling it nice and tight all the way around so there are no wrinkles, and you are done! A whole new look – plush, chic, and highlights the feature wall behind the bed. At the same time, it’s a nice backdrop to the all white bedding.

Nightstand – one of my existing nightstands was light blue…a perfect match to the old wall color. A couple of quick coats of white paint, and now it fits the new color scheme. And it matches the nightstand on the other side of the bed, too. I love the black and white look of the nightstands and the bedding against the black wall, headboard and lampshades.

Artwork – my existing artwork no longer looked right in the room on the freshly painted wall. So, I took and old canvas and covered it in wrapping paper that I found in a really cool pattern and color. Popped it back into the frame, and it looks like vintage wallpaper! This serves as a big hit of color to the room…and is perfect, because when I get tired of it or feel like updating it to a different color, it will be a cinch to do!

Closet door/ curtain – the grey damask curtain with grommets covering the closet no longer looked right in the new color scheme. I had a set of sheer white tabbed curtains that I wasn’t using any longer (see…ALWAYS hang on to that stuff…you will find interesting uses for them at some point!). When hung by the tabs, you could still see into the top of the closet (ugh) and that looked messy. So, I flipped the curtain upside down, put the rod through the bottom hem and hung them like that. Because the length was perfect, I just carefully snipped off the tabs, and now the look is clean and crisp. Just like that material was made to cover the doorway perfectly.

Budget breakdown was:

• Paint and supplies -- $101 (Benjamin Moore’s Aura paints)

• Wall art (wrapping paper) -- $3.99 (I have tons left over to wrap presents!)
• Splurge (round, gathered black silk pillow) -- $12.99

Grand total was $117.98. Just under $120 bucks…how can you beat that!?!

I was going for chic, mixed with a bit of personality, and maybe even a little sexy thrown in and I think I achieved that goal.

I’m very happy with my refreshed room….hmmm…maybe I should just have a small nap now…

bedroom makeover

Well…I’m feeling quite uninspired this week, I’m afraid. I even cruised around Home Sense yesterday, and still, nothing. (Now that’s hard to do!)

Since I refuse to talk about all the wonderful holiday décor ideas until closer to Christmas, I’m keeping those ideas at bay for now. But I promise to start sharing them soon...
So, this week’s project will be a bedroom makeover – mine!

I’ve enjoyed the blue color scheme I used to decorate it when I first bought the house. It's crisp, fresh and fun. It's evolved some over the last 4 years -- adding some greys, a dash of purple and some black -- as I think all good design should, but I've decided that it’s time for a bigger change.

I’m on a tight budget, so I thought it would be a good one to blog about. My goal is to give the room a significant makeover in terms of the look & feel, while using all the same accessories.

That's a good challenge, but not an impossible one.

Playing with paint will be the answer. New color scheme is a grey-ish lavender-ish (amorous AF-600, Benjamin Moore) and a beautiful grey-ish black (wrought iron 2124-10, Benjamin Moore).

Amorous is described as "Intense without being overpowering, this soft shade of purple with red undertones imparts a sense of grandeur and opulence to any room".

I’m going for something more chic, mixed with a bit of personality and maybe even a little sexy thrown in.

This is a virtual bedroom from the Benjamin Moore website (http://www.benjaminmoore.com/) that allows you to virtually paint a room. Very helpful in getting a good idea of how the colors will come together.

upcycled mirror

I found this wonderfully large mirror about two years ago…and it’s been on the “project list” in the basement ever since. When I say found, I really mean that I saw it on the sidewalk one day, out with someone’s trash. I know, I know…it’s not the first time this has happened.

And really, it doesn’t happen that often.

Anyway, I could see the potential. The frame was in great shape, albeit it has seen better days, but still solid wood with a simple style. The mirror was even in tact! The only piece a bit worse for was that the pressboard backing was a bit warped.

In the spirit of upcycling, I took it home. Finally, I found a use for it...the perfect fit for a friend’s cottage. So, the last time I visited the cottage, I packed up my stuff for the visit, and jammed in all the things I would need to do this project at the cottage in the car…

Here are the steps to this makeover project:

1. thorough clean with a damp cloth, wipe dry

2. place on a large drop cloth, in a well ventilated area (outside is best)

3. paint with awesome blue paint left over from another project. (Note: normally, I would recommend priming it first, then painting, but I forgot the can of primer and was too lazy to drive to the nearest town to buy some.)

4. Let dry. Paint second coat of blue paint and let dry.

5. Paint third coat of paint (argh. That’s what happens when you don’t use primer!) and let dry.

6. Flip over frame, place clean mirror into the frame.

7. Add the newly flattened backing into the frame. (I just put this under some heavy stuff for about a week or so to help straighten it out again. It wasn’t perfect, but when it was secured to the frame, you’d never know it.)

8. Secure the backing into the frame with small finishing nails around the entire outside edge.

9. Volia – you are done!

In the spirit of upcycling, I gave this old mirror a new life. I left it for the new owners to hang it on the wall...in case they decided to put it somewhere else.

I like it here because it reflects the light into a dark-ish area of the cottage (and is perfect if you really want to check out your cottage hair!) I think it fits perfectly in the cottage eclectic décor.

This 2 day project was done on a budget that breaks out like this:

 “vintage” mirror (random sidewalk) – $0

 paint – left over from past painting projects - $0

 finishing nails (Home Hardware) - $0.09

Now, that’s hard to beat!

bright whites

While I was wandering around Chapters (www.chapters.indigo.ca) last week, I noticed some fabulous new accessories that I wanted to tell you about.

Think white. Bright white. At first blush, you might think these accessories seem a bit bland. Boring, even.

But imagine solid white items in a sea of color. They stand out. They can be bold. They can be chic. They can offer a clean, crisp, fresh vibe to a room.

They can also add a touch of fun, silliness and whimsy.

And they go with EVERYTHING because, well, they are white. They can stand the test of time and find a place in your décor for a long, long time.

As much as I love black, I have an almost equal love affair with adding touches of white to every décor.

But remember, as with just about everything, moderation is key!

So, think white next time you are looking to freshen up your space…

So, I don’t usually write much about kid’s stuff, but this is just too adorable to pass up.

The Monkey Show is a great little Halifax-based company (located at 1569 Dresden Row) where…you guessed it….you can make your own sock monkeys!

These guys are awesome…you can get your own sock monkey kit for $15 and have tons of choices to make sure your creation is totally unique. They also have Make your own Sock Bunny kits, and Make your own sock Monster kits.

They do birthday parties and other groups as well. What a fun way to celebrate a baby shower!

Whether you go as a group, pick up a kit to make your own great gift, or even to give a kit to someone else and let them make it, this is a fun and lovely gift to give.

Not to mention, anything that can be custom made can also be stylish! Put some extra thought into it when you chose colors and accessories…and a sock monkey that matches the décor, or is used as a jumping off point for a room, is bound to stick around for a long time!

diy lampshade -- upcycle it!

Sorry about last week, faithful just a little rouge readers… I must have been in a turkey coma and forgot to post a blog!

This week is a little upcycling project that comes courtesy of my very smart and crafty friend, Brie. She had such wonderful results with her project, I decided to try it out for myself!

This is a simple and low cost way to upcycle a paper lamp shade. Paper lamp shades were/are quite popular and low cost. If you are starting to get a bit tired of the look, here’s a way to breathe some new life into it…

What you need:

• Paper lamp shade

• Plain white paper (8 ½ x 11 is fine)

• Paper cutter

• Glue gun & extra glue sticks

Cut a bazillion strips of paper approx 4 inches wide with the paper cutter. Ok…maybe not really a bazillion, but you’ll need a lot.

It’s important to use a paper cutter to make sure all of your strips are the same length and width. (And who would want to do that by hand anyway??) I used plain white paper, so my strips were 8 ½ x 4.

Warm up the glue gun, and run a bead of glue along the outside of the paper shade, following the wire rim. Quickly stick the strips of paper to the shade (I say quickly, because glue from the hot glue gun dries fast!), slightly overlapping the next strip on the last as you go along.

Starting from the bottom, work your way all around the entire shade, making your way up to the top of the shade.

A good tip here is the find a place to hang the shade, so you can easily access all sides of it, turning as you go. I learned early on in this project that it’s hard to hold the shade, glue it, place the strips of paper, and turn it with only two hands!

Finally, I got smart and hung the shade from a piece of string from my overhead pot rack in the kitchen…worked like a charm!

Be patient…it’s going to take you a few hours to do this, but it’s worth it in the end.

Now my old paper shade is hanging in my bedroom and offers a very soft, interesting, mood light. If you didn’t actually touch it, my guess would be that you wouldn’t know it was paper. It looks like a more expensive, trendy light fixture now.

Shortly after my friend shared this gem of a DIY project, I saw something very similar on a home décor show….they started with a huge paper shade and glued cone-shaped coffee filters all the way around instead of paper strips. The finished product looked fabulous!

The entire project easily cost less than $10…so what have you got to lose? Give it a try…

Have your appliances seen better days? Are these eyesores ruining your décor?

Now, even your refrigerator or dishwasher can now become a design statement, with Mur Mur appliance decals, which just hit Rona’s shelves (www.rona.ca) within the last few weeks.

These easy to apply decals are safe on your appliances -- MUR*MUR adds personality to your refrigerator or dishwasher. Gone are the appliances you wish you could hide. And since they’re economical and come in a variety of styles, you can change them up anytime you want to transform the entire room in minutes.

They are only available at RONA, where you’ll find these appliqués in a wide variety of styles and unique patterns, ranging from a field of poppies to a scene of Times Square in New York. They start at about $40 for a dishwasher and $70 for a refrigerator.

Personally, I like a more clean, crisp and sleek design, so if I was decorating with an unlimited budget, I probably wouldn’t make this part of my design. But, if I was attempting a more “artsy” look and feel…these would certainly make a bold design statement.

Regardless, I think this a very smart, fun, and cost efficient way to hide or update older appliances that you don’t like the look of anymore. And I think this product would be very effective for staging purposes to help breathe new life into a kitchen.

Just goes to show...absolutely anything can become a piece of art!

fall trend 2011

According to the fine folks at style at home, one of the top trends for Fall 2011 is wooden accessories.

I know that as the season changes, although I never seem to be ready for it, I get excited about warm, cozy sweaters and soft, extra layers on my bed.

So intuitively, it makes sense to me that trends for Fall would be all about warm, inviting spaces.

Using natural materials is one of the top three design trends of the season (to see more, check out www.styleathome.com/decorating-and-design/styling-secrets/fall-trends-for-2011/a/37120/2)

Wooden accessories are the perfect way to bring an earthy and warm tone to your home. Here are a few of my favorites that will bring a natural touch to your living space in no time!

Carpet tiles, tall vases, bamboo dry erase board, salt keepers, iphone case, and ceadar blocks (not pretty, but put a few in your closet for an eco-friendly way to guard against moths…they smell heavenly, too.)

Like any trend…probably best not to overdo it. Just a few accessories here and there will warm up your space just in time for those cold winter months!

wing chair makeover, part 2

As you read in last week’s blog (wing chair makeover, part 1), I picked up an old wing chair in desperate need of some lovin’.

Armed with $40 of fabric (what a deal!), some “how-to” information from various other blogs, and more than a bit of stubbornness, I started the makeover.

After deconstructing the chair, it was time to put it all together again…hopefully with an end result that was better than where it started!

Here’s the process:

Take each of the old pieces that you numbered and lay them out on your new fabric to cut a pattern for each.

Start putting them back on the chair in reverse order (from how you took them off). Aren’t you glad you listened to my advice and numbered and marked them all?? I was also really glad I took photos along the way, because it’s easy to forget exactly how each piece was attached….

Sounds easy enough, right?

A few tools you need for this part of the job include a good pair of fabric scissors, some stick pins and a sewing machine. There was only a little sewing in this job…the piping, the wings and the seat cushion.

You’ll find a bunch of suggestions on easy ways to make piping on-line. Here’s the one I used --http://sewmamasew.com/blog2/2008/07/summer-sewing-perfectly-portable-cushion/.

The best tip for the rest of the sewing is that, just as you did elsewhere, take the old pieces that were sewn together and carefully take the stitches apart, cut your new fabric from the pieces to make a pattern, and then sew them together in the same way.

Another key tool for this job is a staple gun and lots of staples. Remember the thousand and one staples you ripped out? Well…I think I might have put a thousand and two back in! I invested in an electric staple gun ($30) and it was work every single penny even if I were to never use it again.

A good tip is to also have a glue gun on hand. There are lots of pieces that are “tucked” into parts of the chair…the backs, sides, arms…etc. A little dab or two from the glue gun will ensure these pieces lay flat, stay put and look good.

For the back, I decided not to reuse the big scary metal teeth that were holding the old fabric in place and opted for little metal upholstery tacks instead (you need a hammer to gently tap these in place). These are readily available at places like Canadian Tire for about $4 for a pack of 40.

Finally, where the chair calls for a straight, tight edge of fabric (back of chair and outside below the curve of the arms), cut a length of cardboard (part of an old box will do!), wrap the fabric over it and staple it to the chair, then fold the fabric down, pull taut and voila…a nice straight edge!

All it takes a time and patience. And not to over think it too much!

So now that you know the steps to putting it back together again, here’s a look at my finished product. Remember, this was never meant to be the quality of a professional job, but instead a DIY that would still look good for a much lower cost.

For my first time, I think I achieved good results and am happy with my under $50 makeover!

wing chair makeover -- part 1

This weekend, I decided to try my hand at the most difficult DIY project I've tackled to date.

Reupholstery. Yup…serious reupholstery.

See, I picked up an old wing chair. And when I say “picked up”, I mean literally picked it up on the side of the street. It was in front of my neighbors’ house across the street.

I know, I know….but I couldn’t help myself.

Anyway, after I acquired my new old chair, I had second thoughts. So, I got a quote to see what it would cost to get it professionally reupholstered. The quote came back at $350 for labour, $60/yard and 6 yards of fabric, and an 8 week wait!

Hmmmm…I could buy a REALLY nice chair for that. Or I could just put this wing chair back out on the street.

Next stop was the trusty old internet. Amazing what you find when you google what you are looking for…”how do I reupholster a wing chair?” I asked. And low and behold, a zillion “how to” links pop up.

Well…if they can do it, why can’t I?

Off to Fabricville I go and pick up this lovely silvery damask print material suitable for the job. Five meters for a TOTAL of $40 and I’m good to go!

The best tips I read online from various sources are these:

Take the existing reupholstery off one piece at a time, you’ll soon realize that each piece is layered on top of another. It’s like peeling back the layers of an onion.

Number each of them as they come off. You’ll have to put the pieces back on in reverse order later.

And then mark important information like “top / bottom/ left side/ right side”…etc. these pieces will become your pattern that you lay out on your new fabric, so take the time to do it…it will save you time and frustration later, I swear! You’ll need a few tools for the job including an awl to pull out all the staples (I used a flat head screwdriver instead), pliers to get those pesky ones that just don’t want to let go, and gloves. It gets hard on the hands pulling out a thousand and one staples!

Remember to wear work clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty. Pulling off old upholstery is sort of like pulling up old carpets….it’s dirty work. And can be more than a little gross, if you don’t mind me saying.

The upside in my case, I found $3.51 in the cushions and hiding in the frame of my chair as I was taking it apart. For a free chair, I just made money!

brighten up

Now that the renovation is done (and so awesome!), I started thinking that the kitchen needed a little something more.

It has been said that once you start renovating, you can’t stop. And I already have a list! But as I am dreaming about what I could do next, there are lots of little things that can make a big difference now.

(It has also been suggested that I may be a bit nuts about changing my own home’s design and décor!)

Regardless, here’s the perfect example. While I loved the moody purple that I painted my kitchen three years or so ago, I was a bit worried it wouldn’t be bright enough once the addition was built and the windows were moved.

So after the dust settled, I took the leap and repainted the walls a much brighter color (Benjamin Moore, poolside).
It’s a bit of a shock to my moody, calm and cozy instincts.

But it totally appeals to my love of a “vintage-y mixed with modern” vibe.

There is now a huge contrast between the walls and the black counter tops and cabinets, with stainless steel hardware and accessories. A little pop of red here and there really pulls it all together to give it a hint of a retro diner feel.
No question, that the kitchen is now more than bright enough. Can’t wait to see it in the middle of winter….

And when I get tired of it? Well…what’s the big deal about another can of paint?

Great finds online

Here's one of the blogs I follow from time to time....

It's called GUFF (http://guffonline.blogspot.com/) and there is something that keeps me coming back to browse again and again.

They're a used furniture store loaded with great stuff. In the mix you'll find interesting vintage finds, mid-century modern classics, re-purposed industrial pieces, and much more! (http://www.guffonline.com/)

Perhaps it's because it's just so simple...a tool that the owners of "a second-hand"store use to showcase a new, interesting arrival. Perhaps it's because there is something new posted almost every day...and to me, that feels like it must be an exciting place.

Like I'd like to just go and hang out there for a few days to catch all the action -- interesting pieces coming in the door, wondering about the crazy stories and history that comes with them, the great deals to be had if your timing is just right...

If it was located closer (it's on Queen Street East in Toronto), it would inspire me to jump in the car and scoop up some fabulous deals!

For now though, it inspires me in other ways. Vintage, teak, Danish mod....ahhhh, so fun to look at and such cool designs!

And an excellent reminder that good, solid pieces are indeed beautiful and can stand the test of time.

I hate to think about this already...but it's time.

Fall (gulp) is really just around the corner. It was a shock to me to be out and about this weekend and realize that all the summer "seasonal" stuff is being rearranged, marked down and moved aside for Fall merchandise.

Back-to-school merchandise is offically taken over. That means if you are looking for the very best deals in outdoor furniture and accessories, now is the time. Actually, you may be a bit too late already.

To that end, let's talk about extending your time on your patio and outdoor spaces.

A patio heater (also called a mushroom or umbrella heater) is an appliance for generating radiant heat for outdoor use. You knew that, right?
Well, here's how it works: a burner on top of a post, burns LPG or propane, and directs the flames against a perforated metal screen. Heat is radiated from the surface of the screen in a circular pattern around the appliance. A reflector atop the burner reflects heat that would be otherwise lost upwards.

A newer type of patio heaters are the InfraRed Patio Heaters, which although claim to be environmentally friendly, use grid electricity. Grid electricity is 2.9 times more carbon intensive than gas.

Patio heaters became more popular with bars and restaurants first, since they extended the day and the season for their customers to sit outdoors. Now, they are becoming popular with the average homeowner and are much more readily available.
So, if you are in the market for one...there are lots of choices: table top, stand alone, hanging, ones that look like lamps, ones that look like art, and ones that even connect under your umberella. You can get propane ones, ethanal ones, and electric ones. Remember to consider where you want to put it, the radius of the heat it will throw, and of course, how it fits into your decor style!

Since I've just begun to enjoy my new, awesome deck, I'm not even close to being ready to give it up for the season. So this baby (Canadian Tire, $299.99) will be warming up my deck for weeks to come and late into the Fall. And then again in early Spring.

cottage must-haves

I know it’s probably a little late…you’ve probably already got your cottage all set up for the summer and you’re well in enjoying it.

But, I have friends that just sold their lovely little cottage…and bought another lovely little cottage just down the road from the old one. So, after three years of making the other one awesome, they are starting over again…this time on a better piece of land.

I read a couple of good little articles about cottage style recently (thanks again, styleathome.com), and I wanted to share some thoughts.

The cottage is a cottage, not your home, so it should be treated a bit differently. But that doesn’t mean it shouldn’t get the attention. Just the opposite, actually.

It’s the place you go to relax. It’s the place you entertain. It’s the place great family memories are made.

It’s the place you can have a more relaxed style, more whimsy, more fun. But that does indeed mean that lots of thought should be put into setting it up and organizing it just so.

My tips? It should be all about the basics. Then, build and evolve your cottage style as you go.

Here are a few cottage must-haves to start:

1.BBq – invest in a good one. It’s worth it.

2.Hammock – so important to have a quiet place to read, nap or just enjoy the scenery.

3.Adirondack chairs – comfy, sturdy and long lasting. Who doesn’t love them?

4.Fire pit – nothing better than gathering around the fire after the sun goes down to tell stories, play music and roast things (marshmallows, wieners, s’mores…and the list goes on!)

5.Cooler – drag it over to wherever the group has gathered…it means less trips in and out of the cottage and it give the feel of easy luxury when everything is so close at hand.

6.Storage – hide all the rainy day games in one neat and tidy spot. If it doubles as extra seating, a coffee table, end table, foot stool, then all the better!

7.Music – take the party to the beach, the dock, or playing inside, music is a must-have.

8.Beverage dispenser – mix up a large batch of lemonade, iced tea or even water to enjoy all day long. Make the self-serve part easy and it will ensure good hydration in the hot summer sun.

9.Dinnerware – try melamine. They are perfect for outdoor dining and they come in so many bright and bold graphics they give lots of pops of color to the table and scream summer living!

10.Beach towels – laying out on the deck or dock, taking a swim, or enjoying a quick cottage shower, you’ll need lots of these! If you’ve got kids, try color-coding them so everyone knows who’s towels are who’s. Hang some fresh ones in the room for guests, too!

lamp makeover #2

Here is my second lamp makeover. After the first (see Feb 20th blog) success, I’m become maybe a little bit obsessed with doing lamp makeovers.

I found this beauty-in-disguise at Value Village for $9.99 a few months ago. Luckily, I could see past the early 1980’s soft pink glass and gold combo and really appreciate it for its design, shape and size.

I knew I was going to have to put some furniture in my new addition, so I scooped it up and it’s been sitting in “the pile” in my living room, just waiting patiently for a little lovin’.

Finally, with just a few easy steps, it now looks fresh and modern and is a one-of-a-kind.

What you need:

1 can of Tremclad spray paint (gloss white) -- $10 (Canadian Tire)
1 new lamp shade -- $9.95 (Canadian Tire)
Small piece of sandpaper
Painters tape or masking tape

Here are the steps:

1. Clean thoroughly with damp cloth. Then clean it again!
2. Use painters tape to cover the metal bracket for the shade, the light socket and the electrical cord.
3. Lightly sand the entire glass base to remove some of the existing gloss finish. Wipe clean with damp cloth.
4. Carefully and slowly spray the ceramic base, starting at the top and working your way around and down to the bottom until entire lamp base is covered.
5. Wait to dry and spray on another coat. Repeat until you’ve got a good coat of a nice, even, full paint coverage.
6. Let dry overnight. Remove tape and attach new lamp shade.

Remember these handy tips:

Spray paint is hard to control and if you hit it with too much paint, you will get runs. Be patient and add paint in layers and you will get a wonderful glossy finish of rich color you are looking for!

And, please use spray paint in a well ventilated area. Preferably outside, but not when it’s windy. This stuff gets EVERYWHERE….I’d recommend using a mask as well, because it’s hard to do any type of spray paint project without breathing some of it in (yikes).

Again, I’m thrilled with the results of my second lamp makeover. Total cost of this project was $30…you just can’t buy new large, solid, lovely lamps for that price.

I’m 2 for 2 on the lamp makeovers…and I think I’ve run out of places for new lamps in my own place, but I know you might have a place for one.

Don’t be afraid…this is a really easy DIY project you can tackle for a small amout of money and a short amount of time that has big pay off.

laundry room / mud room -- take a look!

So…here it is!

After many months of savings, a long and frustrating permit and variance process, 2 ½ months without the ability to do laundry, a gazillion days of rain, 11 inspections and a whole bunch of other things….I’m ready to show you the inside of my new laundry / mud room. Here are a few highlights (some of which I’ll post further blogs about!):

• upcycled – vintage dressing table, vintage tulip chair, old wood door and a Value Village lamp.
• an amazing set of custom-made sliding doors on an industrial track
• new washer/dryer (Samsung, Future Shop)
• customizable shelving unit that gives me lots of storage space (Rubbermaid, Rona)
• a cool black utility sink and a DIY backsplash (Smart tiles, Home Depot)
• black silk curtains hung from the ceiling that beautifully disguise lots of hooks and shoe & purse storage snuggled up behind the door (Bouclair Home / Rona)
• a black and white floor with vintage charm (Kent)
• black walls (Black Iron, Benjamin Moore) and trim (Jet Black, Benjamin Moore)

I am very happy with the end result. It turned out even better than I had been picturing it all this time! I love it when something in your head finally all falls into place.

Believe me when I tell you that I never thought I’d enjoy doing laundry, but today, I do.

And I love coming home, opening the door and seeing this room. I’m not used to it yet…the last bits just got finished yesterday.

Actually, if I’m being truthful, there may be still a couple of little things to finish up but it’s so close to being done, I couldn’t wait another week to show you.

wonderful contractor revealed!

After 25 blogs about my renovation (there are still more to come…namely the totally decorated laundry/mud room reveal), I’d like to tell you more about my contractor.

Up until now, I’ve only referred to him as “wonderful contractor”. As many of you have asked…and I can only guess…some of you have wondered, who is this wonderful contractor? Does he really exist?Of course he does!

Wonderful contractor is Mike Burns of MRB Contracting (www.mrbcontracting.com)

And I really can’t say enough good things about them. Really, I can't.

Mike, owner/operator, truly is fantastic -- experienced beyond his years (you’d be making a big mistake to judge him based on his age), conscientious, honest and straight-up.

Mike discussed everything with me…as little or as much as I wanted to know. I was updated every step of the way and there was a discussion each time there was a variation from what we agreed on. I always knew and understood all my options and felt very comfortable taking his advice and making decisions.

He’s a perfectionist (so am I!) and his standards of quality are high. He set the same expectation for his crew, and his subs, and his suppliers. And he delivered it from beginning to end.

And he’s got a wonderful sense of design and style, too. We were ALWAYS on the same page (one small exception here with some good, healthy debate). How exciting is that?!?

The crew at MRB Contracting are also top-notch. They showed up on time, worked hard, worked smart, kept a clean work site, were polite, respectful, and even seemed to have a bit of fun while they worked.

It was an absolute pleasure to have them around (in fact, I miss them quite a bit!).

Obviously, I won’t hesitate to recommend them to anyone for any kind of job – big or small. And they will be the very first call I make if I ever do anything to my home again. And who I'll recommend through rouge.

WOOHOO…It’s done!!!

Well…mostly done. Just a few tiny, little things for wonderful contractor to finish up.

So much happened this week…but the finished product is so exciting, I can barely remember!

Lots and lots of painting, the old door was installed (no small feat!), the washer and dryer were delivered, crushed granite covers the driveway, the side "landscaping" is back in order, and the plumbing was finished…even the kitchen sink got fixed!

The overall effect is awesome. And it’s even more spectacular at night. And the deck. Oh, the deck. As it happened, wonderful contractor worked some magic and got a great deal on cedar. So, now I have an incredible cedar deck. It smells divine…like breathing deep in the woods.

Impressively stylish in the design from both sides, it’s also comfy and inviting during the day. And even better, complete with chillin’ out lighting, at night.

I’ve spent a lot of time here over the weekend already…and I don’t expect that to change for a long, long time. Inviting, cozy, private and secure. And oh, how I’ve missed you, barbeque!

Whether it’s getting a bit of sun (I’ve missed you too!), firing up the grill, reading in the shade, enjoying the company of friends, and having a cold bevie or a nice glass of wine, this is my place.

This is my vacation.

Basic, clean line furniture won’t go out of style. Lots of cushions in patterned and solid outdoor fabric add a punch of personality to the space. Two chairs and a love seat offer a great conversation area around a coffee table / footstool.

The large lounger just beckons on a sunny day, but can also lay flat, be pushed up against the side, and be dressed as a large bench for lots of extra seating, if the occasion calls for it.

Things are really coming together now!

This week the outside lights were installed, the inside light was installed, the flooring was installed, all the trim was made and installed, and the wall and the doorway were opened up.

Special thanks to wonderful contractor for all the "extras" this week. You rock.

Yesterday and today, my free labour (a.k.a: mom and dad) were put to work painting…as of right now, the walls have two coats and the trim has one.

Phew…that’s a lot of work, but also very exciting. Nothing changes the look of a room like a can of paint!

I bought a new washer and dryer on Friday and can’t wait for it to be delivered on Thursday night...it’s been far too long since I did laundry (yikes).

Next week, the deck will be built…horray! And I think we’ll even reach the finish line by the end of the week.
To that end, I’m going to save the great reveal of the finished room until it’s completely done and picture perfect…that will include the repurposing of some furniture, another lamp makeover and lots more.

Here’s what happened this week….siding (so awesome…who knew siding could look this good?!?), next layer of roof is almost done (interrupted by rain on Saturday), and a little coat of concrete on the floor to smooth things out (that dried over the weekend). Next week, the big push to the end by wonderful contractor will continue. And my own “work crew/ free labor/ mom & dad” arrive at the end of the week for a visit and to help do some of the finishing work. Should be a busy and fun week!

So this week was an exciting one -- another inspection and all the drywall – installation, taping, mudding, sanding and priming – have been completed.

Thanks in part to five days of work by a harmless older fellow who's level of efficiency and productivity was in stark contrast to that of wonderful contractor and his crew. Absolutely no complains about the end result, though! To me, that's a sign of excellent management.

My exterior light fixtures arrived on Tuesday and they did not disappoint. Actually, they are even better than I thought they would be and are going to look really great. Three, two-light (one shines from the top to uplight, and one shines from the bottom to downlight) black metal, flush wall-mount fixtures arrived safe and sound.

My guess is that they are going to look much more expensive than they really were when they are installed. Gotta love that!

I finally ordered my flooring and had it delivered on Thursday. Because I was willing to sacrifice some space in my living room to store it for a couple of weeks, I was able to buy it in-stock and at a clearance price. That saved me somewhere between $200 - $250 for the same product I was going to buy at a specialty flooring store. In my books, any unexpected savings like this is a welcomed bonus!

Aside from that, I must admit I’m getting restless not having an outdoor space. Especially since Saturday was the first day it’s really felt like summer. Now, I’m not admitting to anything, but there may or may not be a couple of footprints matching my feet in the tar on the roof (ouch – it was hot!) of the addition...

It won’t be too much longer…I have a feeling things are going to be moving quickly now.

This week at the reno, things slowed down a little bit, but there was still progress…two more inspections on Monday and spray foam insulation on the walls and ceiling on Wednesday.

Nice and toasty in there now...can already imagine how nice that will be in the middle for the winter. Horray for not having the pipes freeze anymore!

Wonderful contractor has definitely not disappeared, but he is now stretched between two jobs. I don’t mind so much, because there are still signs of progress. And because if my house could talk, it would tell me that it’s happy, and patient and enjoying the journey.

Next week will see another inspection and all the drywall – installation, taping, mudding, sanding and priming.

The week after that should be full steam ahead again.

I’ve been looking at flooring until my eyes bleed…and I think I found something that’s going to work. Actually, I found a great option at Floors Plus, then happened to see the same product at one of the big box stores – on clearance and in stock! It’s on hold right now for me…just have to call to actually buy it and arrange to have it delivered later in the week.

Not that I need it right now as I’m going to install the flooring on my own later, but when it’s on sale and in stock, I don’t want to take any chances. The only downside is that I’ll have to store it in my already cluttered living room for a couple of weeks. Ugh.

Also waiting for my fantastic exterior light fixtures to arrive…seems like I ordered them ages ago on-line, but it’s really only been just over a week. I guess I'll wait a few more days...

So…here’s what’s been happening at the reno…

Wonderful contractor put in the awesome windows and the door right away to help avoid another incident like last week. He even put a temporary deadbolt in until I could pick up the hardware I wanted for the door.

That became a priority and I swung over the Armitage Hardware on Stanley Street at lunch time. Not sure they knew what to make of me there…it’s really a commercial shop…don’t think they get too many gals in there. Must have been the sparkly belt and pink shoes that threw them.

Electrical was put in this week as well. That’s where you really need to put some thought into the details…not just washer, dryer and heater needs but details like two-way light switches conveniently located so you never have to walk through a dark room and the location of both interior and exterior light fixtures and basic outlets for other purposes.

Don’t forget an outside outlet is very handy for vacuuming the car and/or whipper- snipping the grass. An outside outlet on the second floor deck is necessary for plugging in lovely little white lights, too.

On Friday, the roof was put on. After a little back and forth with the neighbor, wonderful contractor, and a building inspector/”independent party”, the roof on the addition is now nicely snugged up and sealed to the neighbors roof (remember it’s a semi-detached house).

This is best for both houses as now, no water will run down in between my new addition and the neighbours old one, preventing future water damage to both.

I also approved the great deck design wonderful contractor came up with, so we're all decided on what that's going to look like and ready to go on that front when the time comes.

Finally, my floor was delivered…and was a huge disappointment. It didn’t look half as nice as I expected it to based on the photos and the description on-line. Not happy with it at all. Luckily, I could return it locally -- no hassle, no fuss -- and am continuing on the search for flooring. Waiting on some price quotes from Floors Plus (Bayer’s Lake) for two different options I looked at yesterday.

Ok…now we’re really moving!

A slow start at the beginning of the week due to weather, but a very strong finish! I’ll let the pics tell the story of the incredible and exciting progress.

I ordered the flooring this week (not because it’s critical in the project, but because it was on sale this week). I also gave up the dream of using a vintage light fixture that’s got some family history to it because, of course, it’s not CSA approved, so the electrician won’t put it in.

That’s fair…and I learned that it would take more hassle than it’s worth to try to build a new fixture around the old part. So, I did a little shopping yesterday and found a new one that I really like (and was in my budget!)

That’s the update, but here’s the real story of the week…

Early yesterday evening, I find a homeless man trying to sleep in the half build addition…he’s lying down on the floor, eyes closed…

Me: “Excuse me, what are you doing?”

He: “Um…(opening his eyes and raising up to lean on one elbow)…I was just looking for recyclables.”

Me: (although clearly that’s NOT what he’s doing) “sorry, no recyclables here.”

He: (getting up on his feet now and brushing construction dust off him, looks at me indignantly) “WHAT? You don’t recycle?!?”

(As if that’s the crazy thing going on here!)

Me: (somehow hear myself saying) “Of course I recycle.”

He: “Well, will you put them aside for me?”

Me: (finally recovering only a tiny bit of my sensibilities) “Ah…no. I put them on the street for recycling day.”

He: (as he walks away) “Fine, I’ll come by then.”

Me: (left standing there wondering what just happened).

That invaded my private space, and left me feeling uneasy. I didn't like it. And wished there was a boy here with an hammer or a golf club, or something else that looked menacing to handle this...just in case.

It was also one of those really strange moments where the video and the soundtrack did not match.

And it made for a funny story to tell later that night over wine with friends.

The lesson learned? When you want to totally change the subject at hand, just belt out “What? You don’t recycle?!?” or something else completely unrelated to what’s happening and see how people react.

Rain, rain, go away!

Seriously. Go away.

Wonderful contractor is frustrated because this job is going so slowly. I don’t have much to compare it to, but would agree that it’s not happening fast. I don’t mind so much, but I can understand his perspective for sure.

Recording breaking rain must be very, very hard on business. Not to mention that it can't be any fun being outside and soggy all the time. The progress this week included the roughed-in plumbing, another successful inspection, the crushed rock for drainage, and with a break in the weather on Friday, spray foam insulation under the floor.

The electrician was here on one of the rainy days checking things out for his upcoming part in the renovation, too.

And I found awesome vintage hardware for the inside door…just needs a new paint job!

Now, we wait for another non-rain day to finally pour the floor. Doesn’t look like it’s going to be Monday.

Or Tuesday either, according to the current weather forecast.

Sigh…looks like I’m not going to be having that deck party on the May long weekend after all.

Mother Nature was not a friend of the renovation this week.

And come to think of it, not last week either, but I was trying to cut her some slack. It is Mother’s Day, after all.

Regardless, wonderful contractor hustled it as best he could under the big blue tarp and progress was made…concrete forms and more concrete poured for the foundation.

Waiting for the concrete to dry and for a break in the weather to backfill, the plumber was here checking things out to plan his part in the job, and another inspection was passed.

Finally, bright and early on Friday morning, the big blue tarp was pulled down and the excavator boys were back to take care of the backfilling.

Seems a bit anticlimactic, but I now have a solid foundation. And I even got my parking spot back for the weekend, so that is exciting.

In the meantime, I’ve done some more research and am fairly certain that I’ve finally decided on flooring for the room.

And yesterday, I found a great old door at Renovators Resource that will go between the kitchen and the new addition. Just wait until it’s a perfect fit, has some vintage hardware and a couple of coats of paint! This week…a hole in the original foundation to run plumbing, more concrete for the floor and lots of other good stuff…

Now, Mother Nature…you know you are the mother of all mothers. And I love you and appreciate you each and every day. If it's not too much to ask, I would greatly appreciate a little more lovin' from you this week…please?

An exciting week here at the little reno site. The hole was dug, the footings were poured and the first inspection was passed.

All of that in a week that had only one nice day and lots of pouring rain. Luckily, wonderful contractor had the foresight to rig up a giant tarp over the work site.

Fun facts from this week…there were a bunch of old, still intact medicine bottles discovered in excavation, sometimes it takes a whole day for an inspector to show up, a blue trap can filter the light through your windows so you feel like you are inside a pool (or in a blue-light club!), and any kind of activity like this brings out neighbours, random people and the nosey alike to ask questions, check out what’s happening, and to chat.

This week…foundation, back-filling and some framing. Should be exciting!!

Here are the before and after pics of Thursday's demo day. The renovation has officially begun!

Goodbye rotting laundry room…you survived well past your expiration date, and I thank you for that.

I promised to dish on all the good , bad and ugly through this entire process...but I have recently skipped over a couple of minor issues along the way. One was a tussle with my neighbour on the difference between a "deeded right-of way" vs a "deeded parking spot". After a little unfortunate back and forth between lawyers, this issue appears to now be resolved. A good lesson as a property owner to have everything in writing all the time. It will save headaches in the long run. Trust me.

Anyway, moving on...

As you can see, the washer and dryer are waiting for pick-up by someone who said they were coming back to get them on Thursday night. My guess is that wonderful contractor will be getting rid of them on Monday!

It's a bit chilly in my house right now because the downstairs heat is off...and well, the side of the house is half gone. Thank goodness for the pellet stove...I was really toasty last night!

Tomorrow will bring boys and their big machines to play in the dirt (excavating).

Ok…so, it’s not ALL happening, as I thought last week.

Small hiccup…short delay….demo day has been pushed to Thursday. Wonderful contractor is dealing with some “unforeseen circumstances”.

Really, it’s a very good reason…I just don’t want to detail it here. But it was totally unpredictable and a reasonable reason for having to push the start of my job to Thursday.

So, Thursday it is.

Actually, I've been really sick...some sort of flu...since Sunday night and have been home in bed for the last two days. Guess it's a blessing in disguise that there is not any extra banging going on other than what's already happening in my head.

I did get everything done I need to in advance of demo day, so that’s the good news. I’ve done all the laundry in sight, so that’s good too.

I haven’t had any luck finding a new home for my perfectly functioning “old” washer and dryer though. Seems like no one is interested in buying them, even for a small fee, on kijiji. Conserve Nova Scotia doesn’t pick up washer and dryers anymore through their program…only refrigerators, freezers, and air conditioners.

So, if anyone wants them for free, I suspect they will be on the sidewalk sometime on Thursday. First come, first served.

It’s all happening. Oh, yes.

Yesterday….cleaning out of the basement so there is access to the plumbing (and other scary things that are down there!)

Today and tomorrow…cleaning out the existing laundry room (where am I going to put that stuff?!?)

Wednesday….see the lawyer to complete banking and wrap up a few other tidbits.

Thursday and Friday….do enough laundry to last for at least a month (yikes.) Write cheque for first installment of renovation (gulp.)

Saturday…take down my temporary “ghetto-backyard” fencing and move bbq to a friend’s backyard for storage.

Sunday…make a list of “things to save” for wonderful contractor (think: reduce, reuse, recycle!)

Monday…DEMO DAY!

tulips, tulips, everywhere

Ahhhh….tulips. I love tulips.

So simple, so pretty, such wonderful colors. Use them to brighten up any space this time of year!

When I buy them, I usually put directly in a tall base, just as is. As the days go by, I give each stem a fresh cut and peel off any greenery that is starting to get sort of slimy. I swap out the vase for other vessels as the stems get shorter.

Another great tip is to use a couple of the big, flat green leaves and wrap them around the inside of the vase, so you can’t see most of the flower stem. It offers up the tulips in a chic, fresh way.

Perhaps a little known fact (I just learned on Wikipedia!) is that these flowers come in a wide variety of colors, except pure blue (several tulips with "blue" in the name have a faint violet hue).

I put these lovelies in the living room, dining room, in the kitchen, and most often on my nightstand so I can take a moment to enjoy them as I’m about to turn out the light for the night. It’s a great boost to help get you moving in the morning, too!

Here’s the best tip…tulips are now on sale at Atlantic Superstores for 4 bucks a bunch.

tell me a story (actually, show me one!)

Design is a very visual thing. Sounds obvious, right?

For some of us, we can see many design elements and how they will all come together in our head. For some of us, it’s much more challenging to go from concept to details. Either way, it can be overwhelming. And if it’s not, sometimes it’s just plain hard to keep all the details straight.

And sometimes it can be tricky to keep your focus on the overall look you want to achieve when you are faced with buying fixtures, finishes, furniture, paint, accessories….etc.

The most helpful design trick is to create a storyboard. Get a piece of foamcore, or a bulletin board…even a white board will do. Something sturdy that will take a bit of a beating…you are going to be referencing it a lot!

Now, tack (or tape) EVERYTHING to it that relates to your project. If you are doing a complete design, start with a sketch of your room, with measurements. Add a picture of a room you’d like yours to look like (just for the look and feel…the overall design inspiration!), then add pictures of furniture styles you like, paint chips of the colors you are considering…and anything else that you have in mind for the room…maybe it’s fabric, or accessories, or artwork, or lighting options…put it all here.

Now, take a step back and have a good look.

Then, start to edit. Be brutal. Take off anything that no longer fits the overall vision you are hoping to achieve or now looks odd to you in the context of the other things on the board.

Put it in a place you can see if often. It’s a much more visual way of getting a good look at your thoughts and ideas, before you commit to them.

You should end up with a storyboard that gives you a focused direction. Use it to add, delete or consider any other ideas as the project evolves. Put things up there, take some things off.

Take your time and carefully consider your options over a period of time...is this the look I want? Does this feel the way I want it to feel? does this look good in the same room wiht that? If I change this one thing, how does it affect the others?

I promise it will be worth your while and help you make faster, more confident decisions! Don’t be shy to take it with you when you shop, or when you are consulting with the experts involved in your project. Trust me, they will appreciate how much easier it makes their job (and yours). A picture really is worth a thousand words.

spring has sprung..!

Well…somewhere, spring has sprung. Actually, tomorrow is the first official day of spring, so bring it on, I say!

Time to start thinking about spring and summer and your outdoor space. Whether you are starting from scratch, or looking to freshen up your outdoor space, there are lots of options.

Maybe too many options. But don’t get overwhelmed. Approach it as you would any other room. Find a jumping-off point and build from there.

In my case, I already have furniture for my soon-to-be-built outdoor space. I bought it two years ago at a wicked end-of-season-sale. And so far I’ve only used the chairs from the set. I can’t wait to put it all out on my new deck this spring (see reno chronicles).

The furniture looks more like indoor furniture than outdoor, with dark rattan bases and comfy white cushions. Two chairs, a small sofa and a coffee table/bench. Ohhhhhh…I’m excited to see it all come together.

But, that’s just the starting point. I’m going to add a few other things to really make it sing….more on that later.

If you need a little inspiration, check out these pics…some of the things I’m lovin’ so far this season are the tons of more natural looking pieces like this side or coffee table, woven planters and gardening bench (wouldn't this make a great bar?!)

For pops of color, think about more functional items like a heavy plastic serving tray, a colorful watering can, or a metal ice bucket.

Consider your vertical space as well…why not hang (or lean) a great outdoor-inspired mirror in your space? It’s more unexpected, will reflect light and greenery, and will help really pull your space together for a completed look.

As for me, the little red bird citronella candles came home with me and will serve as my “just a little rouge”! A pop of color and a little touch of whimsy…how perfect!

Oh…and if you’d rather put a big hit of spring indoors instead, there are some fabulous chairs you can enjoy all year long!

Just remember, chose a starting point, and slowly build from there. Choose your direction and stick too it...try not to buy up everything you think is great or cute, but stick to your plan. Then throw in a little something unexpected.... and sit back and enjoy every minute in your outdoor space.

talent scout...great idea!

Here’s a picture from the current style at home (www.styleathome.ca) issue…it’s from their high/low decorating section.

Pay close attention to the artwork….I absolutely LOVE this piece.

Here, the art inspired the interior. The stylist pulled the wall color from the art saying, “the piece is so strong and bold, I thought it’d be fun to surround her in a sea of the same brilliant turquoise.”

And they made three other color suggestions pulled from the piece that could be anything from a bold wall color choice or more simply, accent colors for the room. Notice how that was done here.

The results are tremendous. And really quite simple. You can build the design scheme for a room around anything you love. Choose your jumping off point, then build step-by-step from there.

And I love the other idea included on the following page…

Smart. Cost effective. And a fun way to support your local budding art community!

wide open spaces...yikes!

Yesterday morning, this was an empty house. And by empty, I mean not a single stick of furniture or accessory in sight.

By last evening, this was a nicely staged home that is now warm and inviting to potential buyers (I think!).

This lovely house has been on the market for a little while now. It’s a newly renovated, beautifully finished, family home in a great neighborhood. But it didn’t necessarily show that way to those who visited simply because it was entirely empty. And empty can come off as cold, echo-y…and this may surprise you…but smaller than it actually is.

So, with a little rouge and a lot furniture that the client could “beg, borrow and steal” (thankfully he and his friends have good taste, so there were some gems tochoose from!), the key areas in the home are now warm, welcoming and much more inviting to potential buyers.

Dining room, kitchen, living room, main floor office, one kid’s bedroom and master bedroom were addressed. Very minimal staging was done in the kitchen and all three bathrooms just to add a little something as well. Two bedrooms and the finished basement were left alone.
The key to staging an empty house is to put just enough in so that potential buyers can instantly see how the room would be used (as in “ah...this is an office. This is the dining room”…etc). You may think that should be obvious, but trust me, it’s not always the case with potential buyers. And if they have to think too hard to figure out what the space actually is, they won’t buy your house.
Put just enough in for them to get a sense of how their own furniture could fit in that space. When a room is completely empty, it’s kind of like shopping at Costco. You lose all sense of scale. Ever get home and wonder just where exactly you are going to store 72 rolls of toilet paper?

Well, it’s the same here…an empty space can be deceiving and may look small. You may be left wondering if bed will fit in the room because you have nothing to give you a sense of size. So put enough in the room to leave no doubt. A good tip is to not push all the furniture against the walls…leave breathing room to show potential buyers that not only is there room for furniture, but there is plenty of open space to accommodate other things as well.

You also want to put just enough in so that the eye skims over what’s there, rests for half a minute and then easily moves on to admire the selling features – the view, the wonderful flooring, the fixtures or architectural details. Nothing too personal, nothing to showy, nothing too unique that would attract and hold attention.

rouge is happy with the results and hopes that our work may help generate new interest in the house. Another open house is planned for the weekend, so time will tell….

lamp makeover

A while ago, I nabbed this lamp at the 50 mile Musquodoboit Valley yard sale (see 50 miles of possibilities, September 11, 2010). I’m pretty sure I paid $5 for it. I loved the size and the shape….it just needed a new lampshade. I wasn’t crazy about the stripes painted on it and would have preferred an all white lamp base. But there were options….

So this weekend, I decided to finally change it up and give it another whole new life. With just a few easy steps, it now looks fresh and modern.

What you need:
1 can of Tremclad spray paint (your choice of color) -- $10
1 new lamp shade -- $12.95
Small piece of sandpaper
Painters tape or masking tape
Here are the steps:
1. Use painters tape to cover the metal bracket for the shade, the light socket and the electrical cord. Tip: use paper lunch bags (or any other small bag to slip over the bracket, socket and cord. Tape them closed and you can be sure no paint will reach them.
2. Lightly sand the entire ceramic base to remove some of the existing gloss finish. Wipe clean with damp cloth.
3. Carefully and slowly spray the ceramic base, starting at the top and working your way around and down to the bottom until entire lamp base is covered.
4. Wait to dry and spray on another coat. Repeat until you’ve got a good coat of a nice, even, full paint coverage.
5. Let dry overnight. Remove tape and attach new lamp shade.

Two notes of caution….spray paint is hard to control and if you hit it with too much paint, you will get runs. Be patient and add to paint in layers and you will get a wonderful glossy finish of rich color you are looking for!

And, please use spray paint in a well ventilated area. Preferably outside, but not when it’s windy. This stuff gets EVERYWHERE….I’d recommend using a mask as well, because it’s hard to do any type of spray paint project without breathing some of it in (yikes).
Tip: WD40 is fantastic at removing paint from just about any surface that you might accidentally get paint on. Prepare for the wide range of overspray, but have some hefty paper towels and a can of WD40 on hand for speedy clean up immediately after you ’ve done spraying.

I’m thrilled with the results of my mini makeover. Total cost of this project was $28…and I just saw a similar ceramic lamp in one of the fancier décor stores. It was a bit smaller, but similar in shape and the exact same color…and it was priced at $240!

I like mine much better.

I thought it was time to give you a little update on my own reno project.

I’m thrilled to say all is still on track…and now I’m just waiting for old man winter to do his thing and pass us by. Estimated start date for my project is the beginning of April.

As you can see by this recent picture, it can’t come too soon! (Ugh...how embarassing!)

I fear that by the time the demo crew gets here, there won’t be much left….at least that day will be an easy one for the work crew!

Until then, here’s hoping that plastic and strapping can hold up to Mr. Winter for a little while longer…

oversized and fabulous

You probably know about the three basic types of lighting already…or at least you could make a very good guess if you really thought about it….task lighting, ambient lighting, accent (general) lighting.

And you could probably guess that having all three in a space makes for a good lighting plan. And that a good lighting plan combines all three types to light an area according to function and style.

Same goes for some of the methods of lighting….uplighting, downlighting, backlighting.

You may even know about scale and choosing lighting that “fits” the right space….for example, how to choose the right size chandelier and what height to hang it over your dining table, or how your floor lamp relates to your sofa, and how table lamps relate to the side tables they are placed on, and how those together relate to whatever they are near….and so on and so on until you have a well put together room.

After you’ve mastered these basic rules of lighting in design, you can forget everything you just learned (sort of!) and turn it on its head to create sophisticated, bold, modern and memorable, well-designed space…all with one new piece.

Check out these floor lamps that look like oversized table lamps. Look closely…they are starting to pop up everywhere… on the pages style magazines, in design & decor programming, and finally, even in a couple of the shops around our fair city.

Just one of these adds a bold, sculptural yet functional element to your room. And for that reason, I love them.

I love them because they are like big art in a small space.

I love them because it’s sometimes a challenge to find or create a unique and interesting focal point in a room if there are none in the existing architecture (and I’m not talking about the TV!).

While you wouldn’t arrange your furniture so everyone is staring at the lamp (although you may want to), there is no doubt it would draw your eye.

I also love them because they are practical, like all floor lamps should be, and are effective in chasing away a dark corner, as well as serving as one of the many layers of lighting that make up a well-designed room.

And, although the ones shown here are quite modern, they come in many, many styles that would suit just about any décor.

I predict we’ll be seeing a lot more of these in the very near future…

(now, do I have space in my own living room for one of these, I wonder? Maybe if I just rearranged a few things…)

snuggle up and learn

One of the things I like about winter (yes…there are a few!) is the new tv programming that hits HGTV in January/February.

If you’ve tuned in lately, you’ve seen the barrage of commercials promoting new shows. And if you are a junkie like me, you can’t help but grab a few on the DVR to check ‘em out.

Here’s a couple that have caught my attention….

• Sarah 101 – “…is yet another fresh departure for the ever versatile Sarah Richardson. Yes, I said Vanilla Ice…..of the 1989 “ice, ice, baby” fame. Now this is not on HGTV, rather it’s being promoted for the DIY Network, but they are certainly promoting the heck out of it.

Apparently, Vanilla (can I call him “Vanilla”? “Mr. Ice”?) has “15 years experience in home renovation as a general contractor” and he’s about “to start his biggest project yet.”

Hmmm….I guess there was time between the music…er…career, the arrests, the downfall, the many re-inventions of himself, and the various TV appearances including The Surreal Life, Celebrity Bull Riding Challenge, and (you won’t believe this one….) Dancing on Ice (UK), to hone is contracting skills.

Let’s not forget, he also dated Madonna for a bit back in his heyday.

Maybe worth tuning in, after all.

Ok…so now you know the color of the year (see last week’s blog), but you didn’t think I’d stop there, did you??

Consider these other top paint color trends that seem to be popping up everywhere…

1. Lime green
2. Smoke
3. Fern green
4. Soft grey
5. Lemon yellow
6. Hot pink
7. Dark teal
8. Bohemian brown
9. Sand

Personally, I’ve already got plans for the hot pink….I have a vintage vanity/dressing table tucked away in my basement just waiting to have a new life. As soon as my mudroom/laundry room is complete, this baby is going to get a nice shiny new coat of hot pink paint. It will serve as a great place to put on shoes and to stash the car keys, mail, and all the other things that tend to accumulate by the door. It will also be a fantastic pop of color in a room with a black and white floor, dark wall color and a few industrial touches….just wait until you see what I imagine!

Until then, try not be afraid of a little bit of paint. But if you are looking for a change, and painting seems like a daunting task or you are not ready to make the committment, try updating your room accessories with one of these trendy colors and see how you feel about it!

Color of the Year - Vintage Wine

Benjamin Moore's color designers are forecasting "vintage wine"(2116-20) as Envision Color 2011's Color of the Year.

"First seen on the fashion runways of New York, Paris, and Milan, this rich hue with a deep brown base and a hint of smoky violet is just as magnificent in the home.

Vintage wine is an anchoring, rich hue that combines the comfort of a brown with the luxury of a smoky violet.

As an undertone in many of the latest wood finishes, leathers, and other textiles, vintage wine, and its lighter variations, will make a great paint color pick for many applications over the coming years."

rouge note: while I’m not crazy about the other color it’s mixed with here, I can see this beautiful color with smoky greys and furniture and accessories that have a touch of vintage to them. Warm, inviting, and luxurious!

Santa delivered! (see reno chronicles #10)

Finally, I have a HRM building permit in my hot little hands. I can hardly believe it. It's a Christmas miracle!
(Well....maybe not a true miracle, but it's been a long, crazy road to get here so allow me this exaggeration, will you?)

Next steps…review revised estimate (I'm still a tiny bit nervous about getting this within budget, but we're soooo close) and timeline with wonderful contractor, confirm details with bank, then hit the “go” button!

I know there are a ton of details to come, but I am so excited that this first huge hurtle is finally over…and that I am one big step closer to the reality of my little addition to the house.

festive glam

This year, I decided to go glam for the holidays…it’s a big departure for me and it’s the first time I haven’t had a real tree. But I spied this white feather tree about a month ago and couldn’t get it out of my head!

And the black ornaments? What could be more fantastic??

So, here are a few pics of my décor this season…definitely non-traditional, but definitely still festive. A simple palette of silver and white, with a sparse touch of red thrown into the mix.

And outside? Well…that’s bit more traditional, with simple fresh bows, a little white light, and a light green ribbon.

Dear Santa,

I’m sure you are a very busy man, so I’ll get right to it….

All I want for Christmas is a building permit from HRM.

I’ve been a good girl this year. A very good girl.

I didn’t fuss when my first permit application was rejected. I didn’t get impatient when I was told I had to apply for a variance. I didn’t even yell when I had to pay another $500 to do this.

I didn’t get frustrated when I was told the timeline was another two weeks. And I didn’t even say anything bad when it’s turning out to be more than 3 months.

I haven't spend any of my hard-earned savings for this renovation on frivilous shopping (although the temptations have been great).

I have always been nice to my neighbours and I continue to do so now that they have 10 days to raise any objections to my little renovation project. I am really appreciative of my wonderful contractor who is patiently waiting to hear if/when this job might start. And I have great conversations with my mortgage broker every week as she is still waiting on the final word from me to get my re-financing paperwork all set up…

I don’t believe I’m being greedy to want to add 125 square feet on to my little house. Especially because ½ of that is to replace a part that is literally rotting off already.

If you don’t mind, it’s getting sort of chilly where the cold seeps /blows through this part of the house, and I’d really like to get moving before everything is frozen solid.

If you can see to it to fill my neighbours hearts, and those in both the variance and permit offices, with a little extra love this holiday season, I’d be forever grateful.

I promise to be a good girl next year too. And maybe even the year after that.

deck the halls...with tissue paper

Did you make these in grade school? Perhaps out of Kleenex?

Well, guess what…these lovely tissue paper flowers are back….and as easy as ever!

I spied these in the latest issue of Style at Home magazine and I absolutely love ‘em. These very large, oversized flowers will add a big punch to your holiday décor on a tiny budget. And they are fun and easy to create.

Now, I plan to make these in silver and white instead of red and green to match my existing décor. And that’s part of the beauty of these….you can make them in any style, shape, size and color you’d like!

I think what makes this idea new (again) and chic is the large scale, so be aware of the scale in your own design. Be creative, too….use ornaments and ribbon and other fun, festive items to attach in the centers to keep these lovelies looking fresh and fabulous.

Tissue paper comes in large sizes and in many, many colors…and you could also try large 3-ply napkins to give your flowers more structure.

And…this idea doesn’t have to be just for the holidays either. There are a whole bunch of decorating uses that are equally lovely….on the wall in a nursery, at a baby shower or wedding, or why not on your table at Sunday brunch? Hang them on ribbon from the ceiling or archway, make them a bit smaller and put them on plates with name tags, mount them on the wall….so many great ideas!

Here’s a refresher on the steps…

1. Stack eight 20” x 30” sheets of tissue paper and make 1-1½ “ wide accordion folds. Firmly crease each fold.
2. Fold a 16-20” length of floral wire (or pipe cleaner or twist tie!) in half and slip the wire over the centre point of the folded tissue paper and twist to secure. This is where you can also attach whatever you choose for the centre of your flower.
3. Using scissors, cut ends of tissue paper into rounded or pointy petals
4. Separate layers of tissue paper, carefully pulling them away from the centre one by one.
5. Tie a length of fishing line (or string or ribbon) to hang, or to secure to banisters.

rouge completed a staging job on Thursday, so I thought I’d give you a sneak peak at the house that will be on the market early next week.

We did our home evaluation about a month ago…and since then the homeowners, handyman, and realtor have been busy ripping up some carpets, painting all walls, repainting and polishing the concrete floors, and a whole lot of landscaping.

We did our thing on Thursday and staged as much as the budget allowed….the main entrance, sunroom/laundry room, loft office space, dining room, living room, family room and three bedrooms. We didn’t even touch the kitchen, any of the three bathrooms, or the attached studio and workshop. But we left good instructions for the homeowners to tackle these areas on their own over the weekend.

It’s a beautiful home…full of large windows, loads of light, and a spectacular view of the ocean.

kids squared

There’s an exciting new Halifax-based company on the horizon.

“Kids Squared” will be a web-based company that sells affordable, original artwork for kids rooms. A variety of local artists and designers are currently working away on the collection of artwork that will soon be up for grabs.

So excited to report that rouge was approached to design a series! Seen above, the “three birdies” series, done with charcoal and pastels, will be three 12 x 12’s on canvas available for approx $25 -- only through Kids Squared when the company launches in spring 2011.

The site will offer many options…available in a series of three, or singles or mix and match. But it will all be original artwork and it will all be affordable. Paintings, paper art, graphic art, photography and more will be digitized, printed on canvas, stretched onto a frame and delivered right to your door after you place your on-line order.

Perfect for those design savvy parents who refuse to abandon their sense of style when kiddies are added to the family! They will also make for fabulous gifts too…

Ok. I know it’s early. I know tomorrow is only Halloween….

But I was out and about today and couldn’t help notice that all the lovely holiday décor has hit the shelves.

While I’m not ready for Christmas carols to be blasting everywhere I go, I am starting to think about that time of year. To be honest, I love Christmas…must be all the white twinkling lights. I can’t help it. They make me happy, and playful and hopeful.

Favorite trend for this year (so far)?

Definitely silver, white and a pop of rich, dark purple. As always, a throw in a touch of whimsy and you are done!

Now, I’m not suggesting you have to run out the minute you pack away the creepy ghouls and goblins on Monday, but I’d suggest you at least start thinking about it…ok?

So…I’ve recovered from “sticker-shock” on the cost of my little reno project. And I’ve reviewed the quote with wonderful contractor to come up with a few ideas on what to change to bring the cost more in line with what I was expecting. He’s putting the revised quote down on paper right now.

I had a great meeting with the bank, and all is well on that end. They are just waiting for me to give the final “go-ahead” to process the re-financed mortgage. (Silver lining? I’m actually getting a better rate on the entire mortgage because the rates have dropped since I first got my original mortgage). Relieved to know I can afford this little reno and not be house poor. Phew.

Then, I submitted all the paper work required to apply for a building permit. Along with a $300 cheque to go along with it. Three copies of everything – lot plan, architect drawings, contractor info -- and pictures to show my backyard along with that of my neighbor’s backyard (because I’m asking to do the exact same thing as they have already done).

I was feeling good. Things were moving along nicely.

And then….

A phone call from the development office (permits…etc) today who tell me that there are three areas in which my renovation plans do not meet the bylaw requirements. Setback, GFA (Gross floor area) and lot coverage.

And that my permit will not be approved.

Interestingly, since my house was built before the Halifax Explosion in 1917, it does not meet current bylaw requirements on it’s own. Never mind about the little addition. The setback needs to be 20 ft...and it’s 18ft. The GFA states that my house is only allowed to be 714 square feet (!). It’s currently 950 sq ft and I’m hoping to add a measly 126 sq ft. The total lot coverage of my house is only supposed to 35% of the lot. It’s already 55% and I’m hoping to add another 10%.

But, I can submit a variance application. Which is pretty much the exact same thing as what I just submitted, but with a paragraph as to why I am requesting a variance. And a $500 cheque, of course.

Then, every neighbor within 30 meters of my property will get written notice of what I am applying for and they have 14 days to respond, should they have any concerns. (I can't imagine what they could possibly be...!?) Next, the permit office reviews any feedback and makes their decision. If they deny my application, I can appeal it – where I would have to do so at City Council.

[insert giant rant about how bylaws are there for a reason, but should not be applied above all logic and common sense. Especially since most of our city was built a very long time ago. And because the city follks all say they want a healthy, vibrant downtown, but actually make it quite difficult for people to live here in an astounding number of ways...]

So anyway…moving on.

Tomorrow the application for a variance will be submitted. Because really, what choice do I have?

And I guess I’m just going to have to hope for the best…hoping, hoping, hoping...

Wonderful contractor and I have come up with a final plan for my renovation! I saw the architect drawings last week and approved them.

Right now, wonderful contractor is connecting with his sub trades to get a real cost on it all while the architect does up the final plans (to scale) for the permitting process.

Yikes. It's real...and it's about to get a whole lot more real when I see the actual cost.

Am not going to lie...I'm nervous. But also excited. Very excited.

Holding my breath...and a little part of me is still hoping to win "Set for Life"...better get a ticket...

Hello just a little rouge readers! Here is some exciting news and another make-over project I wanted to share with you.

I picked up this awesome, solid wood dresser from a client a little while ago. I was drawn to the shape, size and the cool little retro details. I’ve been mulling over what to do with it since I got it home…so many options!

Just before the Labour Day long weekend, I was inspired by an article I read in a magazine about metallic finishes – zinc and hammered finishes are the next big trend. So, out I went to discover how to transform this piece into what I now pictured in my mind.

This is where I would usually get into the gory details of how I got from the “before” to the “after” pictures. But you may have guessed that this one is a bit different.

The broad strokes of this project were: find a wonderful, solid piece that has great potential, give it a good cleaning, lightly sand it, give it another good cleaning, measure, mark and drill holes for fancy vintage-inspired drawer pulls, paint first coat of awesome hammered finish paint, wait for it to dry, paint second coat, wait for it to dry, install fancy drawer pulls…and step back to admire!

As mentioned, this make-over project is different. Different because my home is full of wonderful gems already. And as much as I already love this piece, I’m more than willing to part with it.

That’s right…this is the first official piece of furniture to launch a new line from rouge!

50 miles of possibilities

Imagine a magical place where no there are miles of little mysteries, fun surprises, curiosities and endless possibilities. I’ve heard talk about just such a utopia. But until today, I had never been.

No...this is not some crazy myth or urban legend. It’s the annual 50 mile Musquodoboit Valley yard sale. That’s right. FIFTY miles.

This weekend’s yard sale actually marked the 20 anniversary of this crazy event.

Each year the Musquodoboit Valley Tourism Association (www.mvta.net) organizes the 50 Mile Route of Yard Sales throughout the Musquodoboit Valley. There are three official starting points -- Dean, Meaghers Grant and Dutch Settlement. You can download a map and description of each official location from the website. Each registered yard sale location is marked with official yard sale balloons, but it would hard to miss them anyway…

My advice? Plan to wander around to them all, or decide on a condensed “yard sale strategy”, but whatever you choose, plan to spend lots of time driving/ walking /looking around. Have some cash on hand and be prepared to do some of your very best haggling!

I’m not a yard sale junkie by any means (we all know they do exist!), but I do enjoy the idea of potentially finding that one hidden gem that screams out to me. You literally never know what you may find that delights you! (And it makes for interesting/crazy people watching.)

I find it helpful to have a focus…perhaps keeping an eye out for an addition to your favorite collection. Or you may be looking for a piece of furniture to test your “make-over” skills. Or maybe you are just on the lookout that special something that’s quirky and fun to add a touch of whimsy to your existing décor.

A note of caution: without a focus, you may get overwhelmed. You may end up aimlessly wandering around. You may end up giving up on the day and going home. Do remember that this is a yard sale…and that means you should expect some…well, let me just say it…some junk.

But if you can handle this environment, are willing to dedicate a good part of your day to it, and are ready to embrace the spirit of a gargantuan yard sale, you will really enjoy this treasure hunt.

I gave myself a budget before I left the house and stuck to it. I also decided that I was only interested in milk glass to add to my collection, a lamp for the spare bedroom and maybe some fun and/or old costume jewelry.

I drove the entire 50 mile route but I must admit that I did not stop at all of the sales…it was just too much! I stuck to the ones that had multiple tables/vendors. I had an enjoyable day wandering around and timed my stops around the weather...best to be in the car when the rain was falling!

I scored some great stuff, too…an oversized white ceramic lamp (needs a new shade), two lovely small milk glass vases, a bunch of cool wooden bracelets, a costume cocktail ring and a white handmade quilt/blanket that’s more than 50 years old. The best buy of the day though, may have been the vintage gold metallic clutch with silk lining for $2.
And I only spent $20.25! (Oh...that includes a bbq’d sausage and a diet coke for lunch!)

It’s a great place to get your yard sale fix for the year….and based on my experience today, I think I’ll be back next year.

I know all you Haligonians are feeling it. It’s obvious in the grocery stores. It’s obvious in places like Walmart. Heck, it’s even obvious in the streets.

Parents buying an obscene amount of cleaning supplies and all the basic staples as their kids – who are on the cusp of flying from the nest -- are trailing behind with a mix of fear and excitement splayed across their faces. Not to mention the literally tons of moving trucks of all shapes and sizes unloading their goods as university students flood back into this city of many universities.

In honor of this, here are some styling secrets I’ve “borrowed” from the fine folks at Style at Home (www.styleathome.com) on creating cool and colorful dorm room décor.

Ten back-to-school dorm decor essentials that will help make life away from home a little more comfortable:

1. Colourful mini fridge - Keep everything you need for study breaks or hanging out with friends in a convenient and colourful mini fridge.

2. Semi-sheer curtain - add warmth and soften the space and/or create a soft separation of areas in a room.

3. Rolling desk chair – sleek, modern and lightweight, these provide proper ergonomic support and often come in lots of fun colors.

4. Graphic throw pillow – cozy and cool and so many options to suite your style and taste

6. Lacquer digital frame – Display a slideshow of fond memories with a contemporary digital picture frame. Not only is this a wonderful way to create a home away from home, but some also plays music and feature a calendar and clock.

7. Organic sheet set – a nice way for the environmentally-friendly students to rest their weary heads!

8. Canvas storage tote -- A great way to keep things organized in a dorm room is a convenient canvas bag. Totes come in many different styles and sizes and also make great laundry hampers.

9. Cast iron wall hook -- A cast iron hook is a great dorm room organizing idea. Hang your coat, towel or jewelry on a lovely light blue teapot-shaped hook like this one to keep clutter at bay.

10. Wall tattoos -- Instead of posters, photos and magazine clippings, decorate your dorm room walls using a sophisticated vinyl wall tattoo. The matte finish gives a gorgeous painted-on look plus this peel and stick decorating idea is easy to put up and remove.

For the rest of us, hang tight. After about a month or so, we’ll adjust to the huge influx of students and embrace the energy they bring to the city we love to live in!

Ahhhh….drawings!

Got the sketches for my renovation yesterday. So exciting. I can’t stop looking at them and mulling it all over.

I am definitely a visual person. It’s so much easier now for me to “picture” the recommendations, because....well, because I can see a picture of it. In my head, I was close to picturing what we had been talking over…but now I can see exactly what wonderful contractor is recommending. There is no room left for interpretation.

I am also a process thinker, so I’m taking all the time I need to consider each element and decide if it is something I like or not, if there is anything I would like to add or delete, if there is anything I’d like to change or reconsider.

And, of course there is!

Important to remember that it’s the natural next step in the process. And a critical one, in my opinion. These drawings are the jumping off point for the next steps…real drawings that need to be submitted for building permits. Real drawings that are used to determine the cost of the project. Real drawings that form the basis of the agreement between me (the client) and the contractor.

So, it’s hugely important not to be shy at this stage if you want to ensure you are going to get exactly what you expect at the end of all this.

I’m going to follow my own advice on this one…think about each element carefully and consider actually living with each element, ask every question that pops into my head, draw all over the sketches and make notes. Another very good sign that wonderful contractor is encouraging me to do exactly that.

All of this, so that when I meet with him next, we can talk it all out…and revise accordingly until I’m happy, we’re agreed, and ready to move forward.

Further to my comment last week about designing with a puppy in mind, I did a little searching. Much to my surprise, I easily found something incredible!

There are some really beautiful options for those of us who are pet owners but don’t want to sacrifice our keen sense of style. Read on if you are loving your doggie but are desperately trying to get used to seeing that big plastic or wire crate plunked in your living room (or wherever)…

Enter Bowhaus, a Canadian company with a flair for design and an understanding of the trendy urban lifestyle. They created a hip, fashionable combination crate and dog bed that is pretty to look at and functions wonderfully. It can even double as a side table, which is very important in today's shrinking urban living spaces.

Other options include the ones I found at dogworks.com and denhaus.com. Wicker, mahogany and other solid wood finishes would work great as bedside tables or end tables. The latter site has a link for Canadian shoppers. My favorite one (top photo) sells for $600.00 + a bed to go it in for another $90.00. Even with free shipping, that’s not cheap. But consider how long you may be looking at your friend’s crate. If it’s only for a few months, it’s probably not worth it…but if your plan is to crate-train your dog for the long haul, it just might be the solution you are looking for. Dogs love having a safe and cozy "den" they can sleep in or retreat to for a rest during the day.

Check out this clever DIY idea of making a dog crate into a desk that I found on designspongeonline.com (a fantastic, inspiring site for all things design!). Great solution if you have an office space you are willing to share with your pooch.

I can tell you with 100% confidence one of these are now on my wish list, that’s for sure!

Still not much to report this week…wonderful contractor called to let me know that the person doing up the drawing is away on vacation, that he hasn’t forgotten about me, and will get back to me as soon as he has something to show me. Guess that's this week's lesson...there is some "stop and go" in the process.

So great of him to call, though. I really like that he’s proactive in following up. Even if it’s only to tell me there’s been a delay or that he has nothing to show me. Earns big points for that!

In the meantime, I snapped a few pics that might be helpful…

This is the kind of awning I’d like to have over the door. Keeps the rain/snow off when you are unloading groceries, pellets for the stove…or whatever. Just giving me a dry space to unlock the door would be great! Add in the same thing over the windows and I really like what it adds to the overall look and design. Very urban chic.

These are the kind of windows I’m looking at…sort of. Picture them trimmed in black. Picture the top two opening and not the rest. Picture them with a frosted treatment. Great for privacy, but will let a ton of light in. Love the idea of a wall of windows!

As for flooring, I’m set on the retro black and white check tiles. These are actually garage-grade, practically bullet-proof, peel and stick tiles that you can order online. Cost effective…and totally cool in my opinion.

That’s it for this week….

Oh…one more thing. You know that hypothetical puppy that I’m factoring into all of this? Well, he’s not hypothetical anymore! He arrived a bit unexpectedly last weekend and he’s a 6-month old, 44 pound bundle of puppy love. So much for my master plan…

Maybe next week’s posting will be about decorating with a new puppy in mind. Or maybe I’m going to need a bit more time to figure that one out…?!?

Hey just a little rouge readers...!

Not much to report on the reno this week.

Waiting on drawings. Thinking lots about what I REALLY need from the new space versus what would be nice to have.

Also doing some calculations based on estimating what percentage of my home we're talking about here and translating that into the same percentage of the price of the house. Good tip for setting a budget. And very effective for bringing me back down to reality.

Aside from that, I'm going to take a bit of time this weekend to snap a few pictures of a couple of things I've seen around the neighbourhood that I like...specifically, a certain type of window and an awning that might look great over the new back door.

Pictures are worth a thousand words, and I'm a very visual person, so I thought it would be helpful in my next discussion with my contractor.

Aside from that, rouge was all set to participate in this year's Habitat for Humanity project (a rebuild of one of the local women's shelters) this week and was SUPER excited about it. Actually, I took two vacation days to do it...then I got an email saying the job was delayed. So I scrambled and switched my vacation so I could sign up again for two days this coming week.

And I got another email last night saying (again) that there was a delay and the job won't start until the second week in August. Sheesh. I'm sure it must be really difficult coordinating all of the details of that kind of job. But I'm afraid that I just can't reschedule my time again....and I'm sooo disappointed.

Best of luck to the build, whenever it starts! Watch for me next year!!

So “potential contractor #4” is looking good. Very good.

We chatted this week and made plans to get together on the weekend to review some ideas. And we did that early this evening.

“Potential #4” and the designer came up with lots of great ideas after their last visit. So much fun to picture and think about. Cooler heads eventually prevail and when it comes right down to it, there were a lot of cool things that maybe didn’t serve the original purpose.

That’s good, though…it’s good to think everything through and keep the very best elements of all the ideas.

We took the time to talk out all the specific elements and decided on a solid direction. It was important to get back to thinking about the main function of the new space…entry/mud room and laundry room…and a space that can happily house the puppy.

Yes, that’s the puppy I don’t have yet. But it’s important to really think though how the space is going to be used as far into the future you can imagine. And I know there will be puppy who will need some space where he can live during the day, without giving him full reign of the house when he’s alone.

Ultimately, that means that the lofty and super-cool ideas fell to the wayside and plans are back into the realm of reality. Reality that is looking good, too.

I am excited about where it’s going…but still very nervous about budget. Next up is drawings that I’ll sit with and mull over for a few days. Then comes the estimated cost.

Then, I expect, some revisions.

There are still many, many steps to come, but I am enjoying the process so far and am looking forward to the ride…

To bring you up to speed on the project so far, I’d like to tell you about my quest for the perfect contractor.

Many months ago, I knew this project would have to be done late summer. I started asking around and putting out feelers because I know the summer months book early for good contractors.

In fact, last summer I ran into “potential contractor #1”, whom I actually know and mentioned the job to him. He was interested and said he was mostly booked already, but could probably meet my timeline, if I pushed it to early fall. Fine by me. We talked about it at length that day and agreed he would come by in the winter to take a look, talk it out and provide an estimate.

Despite my efforts from January to March, I was not able to get him to come in the winter. He was “too busy” to even give me an estimate.

Next, I talked to “potential contractor #2” that actually did some work on my house two years ago. He did a good job. He gave me a detailed estimate/quote and let me know, in advance, of anything that would put him over that budget before moving forward.

It took him longer than he originally expected to finish the job….partly because he’s a talker and some days he may have talked more than he worked. A couple of times, I had to call him to see where he was because he didn’t show up when he said he would. And I quickly realized that he wasn’t great at the fine details, so he had to redo a couple of small things to meet my satisfaction.

Overall, he’s a nice, honest guy who got the job done. So I got in touch with him again about this reno project. He came over, we talked about the job (at length) but he didn’t take measurements and said he’d come back as we got closer to the project date and get the details. He preferred to wait a bit before providing an estimate because “the cost of materials fluctuates” and he wanted to be accurate. He did pop in once after that…but just to chat.

In early June, I was golfing (I use that term liberally!) at a work/charity event and chatting with another person assigned to be on our team. Turns out her brother is a contractor. She gave me the info on “potential contractor #3” and promised to give him the head’s up that I’d be calling. I did call and left him a message at home and at work explaining that his sister gave me his info. I never did get a call back.

Next, I called “potential contractor #2” again about a month ago and caught him in the middle of something. He said he’d call me right back…but I haven’t heard from him since.

In the meantime, I’ve still been asking EVERYONE I know to get a recommendation. Three weeks ago, a friend popped in for a quick visit with the new baby (so squeezable!). I mentioned it to her. Later, she mentioned it to her husband who has great experience in this industry. He called a few days later with a strong recommendation. I don’t know how I didn’t ask them sooner.

I called “possible contractor #4” and left a message. He called me back 5 minutes later and said he could come by that night (really?!? wow). He showed up exactly when he said he would. We chatted and I liked him instantly.

He’s keen, smart and motivated. He said he’d like to have his designer come back with him to brainstorm some ideas later in the week. They got delayed, but he called to apologize and set up another time.

They were waiting for me to arrive at the rescheduled time (that never happens!). We all talked -- they had excellent questions for me about how I was going to use the space and what my needs were. We talked about permits and timelines. They sketched out the space and took all the measurements. They agreed to go away and draw up a couple of the ideas to present back to me. Very professional, efficient and focused.

That was last Friday and I am confident I’ll hear from him this week. I don’t want to jinx anything, but I think I may have found the perfect contractor for the job…

A few tips for you:
• Start looking early – it may take months to find the right contractor for the project.
• Ask everyone you know for a recommendation. You want to be sure you can be happy with both the experience and the work done.
• If possible, go see what they’ve done in someone else’s’ home. Ask your potential contractor for references if the recommendation doesn’t come from a trusted friend.
• Get everything in writing. Estimates/ quotes…etc.
• Discuss how any changes to the job specs or costs will be handled. Agree on this upfront and get that in writing too.
• Make sure your contractor has insurance. You don’t want to be responsible for anyone getting injured on the job.
• Do your homework and find out what permits you need based on city by-law. Don’t let anyone tell you that you don’t need them.

As I write this, it makes me realize that my quest for the perfect contractor feels a bit like dating. It requires a commitment to the search. It involves asking everyone you know for a possible recommendation. It requires developing a relationship – building trust, honesty, integrity, diligence and common sense. It requires setting and managing expectations. It requires being open to possibilities, being both flexible and adaptable.

Now, finding a contractor that you’d actually like to date…that would really be something, wouldn’t it?!

The time has come.

When I bought my own home three years ago, I knew the little back addition that houses the laundry room was rotting from the bottom up. It was listed “as is” in the house documentation.

At the time, I thought….no problem. I’ll do something about that right away.

Now, here I am and it’s getting desperate (see “airing my dirty laundry” posting for more). Good thing I’ve been planning a renovation for about a year now. Well, mostly just dreaming about it, but I actually started to plan it about 4 months ago. Saving for it started much earlier than that...

It’s time to get the old one torn down (before it falls down). It’s time to build a small addition in it’s place.

A small addition that will be a new laundry room and mud room. It will probably be the entrance to the house I will use most often. It’s closer to where I park the car, and there will be usable space to unload my things, hang up my coat and kick off my shoes. Unlike now where the front door opens directly into the living room.

It also means that there will be a deck built on top of the new addition. Now “the door to nowhere” that exists off the second floor landing will be the door to the deck.

And the deck will be a private, safe and secure outdoor space that I will enjoy immensely. Better than my current “temporary” ghetto backyard that I build each summer and tear down each winter.

Don’t get me wrong…it was a really smart idea and it’s served me very well. But it will be nice to have permanent space that I don’t have to leash and lock down furniture or my bbq to make sure it’s still there the next day. Although, I have developed a strange fondness for the green astro-turf...

I’m hoping rouge readers may enjoy hearing about my little renovation – from start to finish, I’m going to chronicle it all here. I’m hoping there will be lots of learnings that might be helpful to you someday.

I’m excited about the process and I can’t wait. I’m hoping to see some action on this in September. But before I see tangible proof, there’s finding a contractor, making a plan, costing it all out and setting a budget, getting permits…and a whole bunch of other things that have to happen before picking the paint color and decorating it (which I’ve already done in my mind, of course!)

bathroom makeover

How do you handle stress?

Some people eat. Some people drink. Some shop, or garden, or run, or a whole bunch of other activities that are good (or bad!) stress-busters.

It’s a bit different for me, I guess.

I redecorate. Or move furniture around. Or refinish old furniture. Or paint the walls.

This weekend, I wallpapered.

Well, not just wallpapered…I removed the “old” wallpaper I put in my bathroom this winter. I’ve never really been happy with it. It was nice, but not exceptional.

So, I took it down and I’m happy to say that it actually came off even easier than it was reported it would. In fact, it was easier to peel off the long, still intact, full panels of wallpaper than it is to peel off those annoying price tag stickers.

It was down in less than 10 minutes. And the paint on the walls was still in perfect shape.

After it was down, I realized that I hadn’t even taken any pictures of it…so what you see here was the pre-wallpaper (on one wall only) look.

Of course, I had a new plan before I started this little adventure. I saw another wallpaper that I really loved a little while ago. But it wouldn’t work in my bathroom because of the brown-ish laminate countertop.

So finally, I decided to try my hand at painting the countertop because I didn’t want to cough up the cash to replace it.

It’s not that hard, although I was a bit nervous. But I did my homework and then asked for extra guidance before buying the materials. All you need to do is:
• Clean the existing countertop
• Give it a quick, light sanding
• Clean it again. Then clean it again (!)
• Use a dense foam roller to give it one even coat of melamine paint
• Wait for it to dry
• Give it another coat
• Wait for it to dry
• Be careful and treat it gently for about a day or so to give it time to dry and harden

That’s it. Now it’s a fresh, clean and updated white laminate countertop and I couldn’t be happier with the results! (Note: I wouldn’t do this to kitchen countertops…)

Now that the countertop was taken care of, I splurged on the wallpaper I loved and got to work. Instead of tackling a “feature wall”, I decided to go bold and do the whole bathroom.

It’s a bold pattern, but it’s got a sort of vintage-y feel too. Brown, teal and metallic keeps it from looking like grandma’s bathroom.

It makes me happy. What else can I say?

Mixed with the existing white, glass, and brushed nickel accessories, it came together even better than I envisioned. Tres chic.

I’m not going to lie…it was a big job. Lots of nooks and crannies in a bathroom to paper around. A sharp exact-o knife for trimming and a lot of patience are key.

And when I noticed that I was getting a bit sloppy, I stopped for a break (and went outside to enjoy the beautiful weekend!)

Well, it’s Sunday night, the job is done and I’m feeling a lot less stressed than I did at the end of last week. Some good physical labor and something different to focus my brain on always does the trick to blast any stress away.

Just in time for Monday to roll around. Sheesh.

Now, I really ought to think about learning to run…

uninspired?

Are you feeling uninspired? Stuck for ideas? Facing a room that needs a little something, but don’t know where to begin?

It happens. And it’s ok to admit it.

In fact, it happens to me too. It’s happening right now. So I was thinking about all of the things I do to get inspired and I thought some of these tips may help you too.

Here are some tips and tricks to inspire:

• Don’t worry about having a plan for an entire room right away. Start small…with one item and slowly build on it. This way, you won’t get overwhelmed and give up!

• Look for inspiration in obvious places – don’t over think it!
o Flip through design magazines. Even flip through a fashion magazine or two.
o Watch a couple of design shows…HGTV offers a bazillion.
o Visit a couple of design and décor websites and blogs.
o If there is a paint color you love, grab a bunch of the paint chips to have on hand while you start to develop your ideas and look at accessories.

• Look for inspiration in the not so obvious places, too. This is my favorite way to get inspired!
o Visit home décor shops…both the big box and the smaller boutiques to slowly browse.
o Pay attention to colors, patterns, shapes and styles.
o If any item speaks to you, that may be your starting point. It could be something big or something small. Consider a lamp, a vase, dishware, a piece of furniture...anything, really.
o Don’t forget to look at fabrics and textiles…these often trigger something and are excellent jumping off points that lead to an entire room inspiration!
o Look at bedding, rugs, pillows, table cloths, and curtains. And don’t forget wall paper and wrapping paper, too!
o Go to your closet. Pick out your favorite dress or outfit. Think about how it makes you feel and why you like it so much. Translate that into an idea for your room décor. Keep those elements in mind while you start to build your plan for the room.

• Don’t fall into the trap of looking for a complete room – either on display or in a magazine – and feel like you have to go out and buy everything exactly as it is to replicate it in your space.

• Make it personal. Good, complete design that you will want to live with should reflect elements of your own personality.

• Build it up over time and add in layers as you go. No pressure to do it all right away. But it’s important to have a general plan and stick to the overall idea as you go. Great, inviting rooms should evolve as you do!
